BATS - UpscalePro
AI 2x upscaling with RealESRGAN+ (Nvidia RTX 2000+) – including automatic QTGMC deinterlacing
UpscalePro doubles the resolution of SD material using AI: the RealESRGAN+ AI model (Nvidia GPU accelerated, RTX 2000 series or higher) rebuilds soft, noisy or dated-looking footage into high-resolution images – 576i/576p becomes roughly 1080p. Unlike the QTGMC-based presets (see Upscale & Deinterlace), AI upscaling generates new image information: the AI reconstructs plausible detail instead of merely rearranging existing pixels. Interlaced sources (e.g. DV 576i) are automatically deinterlaced with QTGMC as part of the job – field order, pixel aspect and color space are read directly from the clip. The result: clean, progressive HD material from a single right-click.
Adding the menu entry
“UpscalePro” is added through the “Add function...” assistant (right-click in the BIN → Add function... → pick UpscalePro - AI 2x Upscale Nvidia (RTX 2000 series or higher)). The assistant’s questions:
- Add the result to the BIN? (note: “this preset will accept the trimmed version of the selected file in EDIUS”): Yes → the result is registered in the BIN under __BAT Server\Upscale; No → file only.
- Enable caching?: the caching mechanism reduces GPU RAM consumption and speeds up the process. The catch: the first run takes a few minutes until the cache has been built. The cache depends on the resolution – as long as all files share the same resolution, it is built only once; each additional resolution triggers one more build.
- Placement (BIN or timeline) and name of the menu entry (suggestion: “Upscale AI vsrealesrgan”), then [Preview '.bat0' file] / [Add menu entry].
How to use it
- Right-click the clip (SD, progressive or interlaced) → Upscale submenu → your entry (e.g. “Upscale AI vsrealesrgan”).
- BAT Server hands all clip data (source path, IN/OUT, field order, pixel aspect, color space) to the VapourSynth script. Interlaced sources are deinterlaced with QTGMC, progressive sources are upscaled directly.
- RealESRGAN+ renders the 2× result on the Nvidia GPU (as an MOV file next to the source) – with “add to BIN” it lands directly under __BAT Server\Upscale. Progress is shown in the job display.
Good to know
- Hardware requirement: an Nvidia GPU of the RTX 2000 series or newer (the AI renderer needs plenty of VRAM); without a suitable GPU the preset is not really usable. The caching option relieves the VRAM pressure – with many clips of the same resolution we recommend it.
- AI creates detail: RealESRGAN+ invents missing details plausibly – ideal for soft, noisy or dated-looking SD material (DV, VHS, DVD). Very fine patterns (small text, grids, stripe patterns) can occasionally be “decorated” by the model – double-check critical inserts.
- 2× from SD = HD: the preset is tuned for the SD → HD jump (e.g. 576i50 → about 1080p); HD → 4K is not the target case.
- Interlaced handled automatically: the preset reads the field order (TFF/BFF) and pixel aspect from the source file and deinterlaces with QTGMC before upscaling – nothing to configure on your side.
- IN/OUT are respected: trimmed clips are processed only in the IN/OUT range; the source file remains untouched, a new file is created.
Managing the preset
Entries created via the assistant are user presets: the .bat0 file lives under C:\ProgramData\EdiusPowerTools\BAT-server\bat_files\BIN\ or …\bat_files\timeline\ depending on your choice, and can be freely edited, renamed or deleted (deleting removes the context-menu entry). BIN registration and the caching flag are baked into the .bat0 – changes take effect from the next run.
